Protecting Your Energy: Why It Matters and How to Do It

Have you ever left a conversation feeling completely drained, or walked into a room and instantly sensed a shift in your mood? Maybe lighter, maybe heavier, but definitely different? If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone and you’re not imagining it.


What you’re experiencing is the flow of energy. Just like the air we breathe, energy moves all around us, influencing how we feel, think, and even how our body responds.


In my book Energy Unveiled: Exploring the Forces That Shape Our Lives, I share what I’ve learned about these invisible exchanges and how they can shape our daily lives. Once you start noticing how energy works, it becomes so much easier to protect yourself and stay balanced.


Why Do We Feel Drained?


Every interaction has an energy exchange. Some people naturally lift us, filling us with warmth and inspiration. Others, without meaning to, can leave us feeling tired, heavy, or on edge. Environments have energy too. Think about how calm you feel in nature compared to how tense you might feel in a crowded, noisy space.


When you don’t understand what’s happening, it can feel confusing or even overwhelming. But when you recognise that energy is constantly moving and affecting you, you can start to take back control. Awareness is the first step to empowerment.


When I am in a crowded space I have to use affirmations to keep my energy safe and to stop me absorbing any energy around me.


Why Protecting Your Energy Matters


Protecting your energy isn’t about shutting yourself off or avoiding people. It’s about understanding what belongs to you and what doesn’t, so you don’t carry the weight of emotions and energy that aren’t yours.


When you protect your energy, you feel calmer and more centred in daily life. You avoid becoming overwhelmed by other people’s moods. You build strength to handle challenges without being thrown off balance. You create more space for joy, creativity, and inner peace.


Think of it as self-care for your inner world. Just as you nourish your body with good food, protecting your energy keeps your emotional and spiritual health strong.


Simple Ways to Protect Your Energy


Here are some gentle practices you can try:

  • Ground Yourself – Take a moment to stand outside, breathe deeply, and imagine roots connecting you to the earth.

  • Set Boundaries – Learn to say “no” when something feels too much. Protecting your time and energy is not selfish, it is necessary.

  • Visualise Protection – Picture a bubble or shield of light surrounding you before entering situations that might feel draining.

  • Cleanse Your Energy – A salt bath, smudging, or simply stepping outside into fresh air can help you reset.

  • Use Affirmations – Repeat phrases like “I release what is not mine and hold onto my own peace.”


A Lifelong Practice


Protecting your energy is not a one-time fix. It is an ongoing practice. It is about becoming aware of how the unseen world affects you and choosing how to respond.
